Apple Reveals New CEO: John Ternus Will Succeed as of September 1 After twenty years working across its product teams, he will head up the company.

Ternus said in a statement that he is lucky to have worked under Steve Jobs and learned from Tim Cook who has led Apple since 2011. He had been viewed as a leading in-house candidate for over the past year before being appointed.

Deep experience in product development

Most recently, Ternus was the senior vice president of hardware engineering. He was instrumental on building a lot of the products Apple is known for today from the iPhone to Mac. He is also working on the Apple Vision Pro, new AirPods and more recent models of iPhones and Macs.

He has been with Apple since 2001, working as a member of the product design team. He eventually progressed to higher leadership roles, serving as vice president of hardware engineering in 2013 and part of the executive team in 2021. Previously, he served as a mechanical engineer and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania.

Big expectations after Tim Cook era

Ternus will take over from Tim Cook, who helped grow Apple into a company valued at around $4 trillion. Cook’s leadership focused on steady growth and expanding services built around Apple’s existing products.

With this transition, attention now turns to how Ternus will shape the company’s next phase. He takes over at a moment when the tech industry is rapidly moving in an AI direction.

Focus shifts to AI and future products

Industry insiders state that there would be high pressure on John Ternus to perform early, especially in the landscape of AI. Having a hardware background, it appears Apple will keep making good devices while adding smarter features.

The real question is whether Apple can chemistry for its next big thing in a rapidly moving market. In many ways, the next few months will determine in which direction Ternus takes the company next.
