UK based voice technology infrastructure company AethexAI has closed a $3 million pre-seed funding round to create operations in Africa and the Middle East.

4DX Ventures led the investment, with follow-on from Enza Capital, Dorm Room Fund, Mojo Ventures, 26 Fund and a range of strategic angel investors. Backers include telecom-industry titans, Stanford faculty and researchers affiliated with Anthropic.

It has also formally launched its platform, that helps enterprises to build and manage voice-based customer services in parts of the world where internet connectively and telecom networks can be more patchy.

A lot of emerging market companies depend on phone calls for customer support and performing part or all their business. Despite this, current voice solutions are still confined to local languages, numerous accents as well as inconsistent call quality and cost. Sometimes, these tools cost more than humans.

AethexAI seeks to overcome these hurdles with a platform designed for the specific dynamics of local markets. Its system packages its self-hosted voice models with managed telephony services, workflow automation and API integrations. You get a no-code interface with the option for developers to build and launch your voice agents. The rest of the company has its sights set on about 1.5 billion people in Africa and Middle East first before venturing into other emerging markets after that.

AethexAI was founded by Mariama Diallo and Ayooluwa Odemuyiwa. Diallo previously worked at Goldman Sachs before joining Y Combinator-backed Model ML, where she focused on product and growth. Odemuyiwa studied computer science at Caltech and later worked on engineering systems at Meta before attending Stanford Graduate School of Business. The founders said they were inspired to launch the company after meeting companies throughout Africa and the Middle East as well as seeing that existing voice platforms had not been tailored for local conditions. As a result, corporate entities found it hard to automate customer interactions and enhance efficiency.

Kora 1, the company’s proprietary voice model system, sits at the heart of the platform. Trained on licensed data from call centres, radio and content platforms. This model is designed to be language-agnostic, regional accent-agnostic and noise-robust.

In addition to its core platform, AethexAI is also unveiling a developer service that enables third-party developers to create voice applications via one API.

As Mariama Diallo explained, many of the businesses in these areas already rely on voice as a communications medium but that the technology that has been available to them is not meeting their demands. The reality is that the company has constructed its own infrastructure, for an improved real world performance, she added.

Shortcomings like high latency, network interruptions, code-switching, and poor audio quality have hindered the success of existing voice systems, according to Ayooluwa Odemuyiwa. She said that addressing those challenges "was not about iterating on existing products, but rather building an entirely new technology stack."

Walter Badoo, Co-founder and Managing Partner at 4DX Ventures, said the company has already shown strong results through enterprise deployments and believes AethexAI can become a major voice infrastructure provider for the next generation of users.

This newly-risen capital will enable the company to grow its engineering and commercial teams, expand enterprise deployments, and bolster key markets. Currently AethexAI has 10 employees and is expected to have a headcount of over 20 by the end of 2026.
