An abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, is a cosmetic procedure common among many women today. Its popularity comes from offering a quicker, less painstaking way to lose belly fat and achieve 11-line abs.
If you are considering having a tummy tuck procedure, there are a few things you should know.
A full tummy tuck procedure addresses the entire abdomen; therefore, the incision is low and leaves the abdomen tightened. The surgeon brings the muscles together above and below the belly button while completely removing the excess skin.
For mini tummy tucks, on the other hand, the procedure only addresses the bottom of the abdomen. The surgeon removes only a small amount of skin above the pubic bone, which tightens only the muscles below the umbilicus.
A mini tummy tuck is a limited type of procedure, and not everyone is a good candidate for it. A mini tummy tuck is most commonly done by people who have just finished having children or have lost significant weight. It is also good for individuals who want to tighten the aging skin on their upper abdomen.
A tummy tuck surgery lasts between three to four hours, depending on what other treatment(s) the patient receives alongside the procedure. More often than not, surgeons combine procedures during the surgery, with liposuction on the back or liposuction plus fat transfer. Alternatively, some patients elect to book a full mommy makeover with an all-in-one tummy tuck, liposuction, fat transfer, and breast lift.
Recovery after a tummy tuck can take about six weeks, during which the patient must follow certain restrictions. For example, most patients should avoid any strenuous activity, such as heavy lifting, within those six weeks.
Liposuction only addresses extra fat. It does not address extra skin nor does it improve the musce separation that is seen with pregnancy and weight loss or gain. As a result, for many patients, liposuction will provide a more modest result than a tummy tuck.
“Tummy tuck surgeries are a go-to option for many women, especially those struggling with losing fat in the midsection area coupled with loose skin or muscle separation from pregnancy or weight loss,” says Sacha Obaid, M.D. “Understanding the tummy tuck process is key and speaking with a plastic surgeon can help you understand if a tummy tuck is the best procedure to meet your aesthetic goals.”
