Cambridge-based healthcare startup Flok Health secured $12.5 million in Series A funding led by Albion VC. The round included existing investors Eka Ventures, Form Ventures and new investor Mercia Ventures. The funding will be used to rollout its physiotherapy service across the UK, add new health conditions supported by its ongoing treatment and expansion into global markets.
Flok Health, founded in 2022 by Finn Stevenson and Ric da Silva, is a solution to an ever-increasing problem facing healthcare; too many patients and not enough clinicians. Founded in 2020, the company launched digital physiotherapy service that enables patients to be assessed, treated remotely with guidance on how to recover and what happens following discharge all via a mobile app.
It is designed to provide people with quicker access to care and ease some of the burden on healthcare providers. Flok Health claims to be the first permitted system in Europe to be able to manage an entire physiotherapy treatment journey without the direct involvement of a clinician. The device also has UK Care Quality Commission approval, and is classified as a Class IIa medical device.
Disability due to musculoskeletal disorders, including back pain, continues to be one of the largest causes of disability worldwide. Right now, hundreds of thousands are awaiting treatment in England. Flok Health wants to shorten these delays by quickly connecting healthcare teams with the support they need, while separating simpler processes from those relating to more complex needs of patients.
The service is already offerered to over 2.4 million NHS patients in eleven regions The firm claimed that recent deployments were able to halve waiting lists in some locations, while saving a significant amount of clinical time. In one NHS program, over 80% of users said their experience matched or exceeded that of traditional physiotherapy appointments and patient feedback has also been largely positive.
The company mainly focuses on treating back pain, but plans to expand with its new funds. Conditions for future services include knee pain, hip pain and women's pelvic health.
The health care sector has always been seeking innovative approaches to handling increased demand and shortages in the workforce. Flok Health contends that the model has the potential to increase access to treatment, while enabling healthcare systems to function more efficiently. The ability of the company to maintain patient outcomes and regulatory standards will allow for long-term growth as the company develops.
