Rudi Johnson, a standout running back best known for his years with the Cincinnati Bengals, has died at the age of 45. Law enforcement in Florida say the preliminary investigation suggests Johnson died by suicide, and that no foul play is suspected.

Johnson’s career in the NFL spanned eight seasons. He was drafted in the fourth round by the Bengals in 2001 and played with them through 2007 before a final season with the Detroit Lions in 2008. During his time in Cincinnati, he delivered some of the most productive rushing seasons in franchise history.

Among his career highlights:

  • In 2005, Johnson set the Bengals’ single-season rushing record with 1,458 yards.

  • He made one Pro Bowl appearance in 2004.

  • Across his career, he totaled 5,979 rushing yards and 49 rushing touchdowns, along with 113 receptions for 676 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns.

  • He ranks fourth on the Bengals’ all-time rushing list.

Born in 1979 in Ettrick, Virginia, Johnson played college football at Auburn University before declaring for the NFL.

In the days before his death, Johnson had been honored by his hometown community. He was posthumously inducted into the Chesterfield Sports Hall of Fame, and he had recorded a video message for the induction, urging others to “dream big, stay focused, never give up.”

The Cincinnati Bengals expressed deep sorrow in a statement:

“Rudi was a fine person and an excellent running back for us … Everyone liked him and saw him as a dear friend. We are deeply saddened by his passing.”

His passing has triggered an outpouring of tributes from former teammates, fans, and the wider NFL community, as many remember not just his talents on the field but also his warmth as a person.

The full circumstances around his death remain under investigation, as authorities await further findings.
