Tesla is officially entering the Indian market with the grand opening of its first Mumbai showroom on July 15, 2025, located in the upscale Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The debut marks a strategic push into the world’s third-largest automotive market, following years of anticipation and speculation.

Although it's still uncertain whether CEO Elon Musk will attend the event, rumors swirl that he may also unveil Starlink services in India during the occasion.

The Tesla Model Y—the company’s best‑selling global model and 2023’s top worldwide vehicle—is expected to be the first model introduced in India. It's already been spotted undergoing road tests and submitted through homologation filings, confirming Tesla's plans.

This premium electric SUV is projected to cost around ₹59.89 lakh (about $70,000), inclusive of a ₹6.21 lakh import duty and freight, when brought in from Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory. It boasts advanced features like a 15.4‑inch touchscreen, panoramic sunroof, and electric liftgate.

Despite fierce competition and high import tariffs of up to 70%, Tesla has begun accepting Model Y orders on its website. The company also plans to launch supercharger stations in Mumbai and the Delhi region.

India recently implemented a policy cutting EV import duties to 15% for automakers investing at least $500 million and planning local manufacturing within three years—creating pressure on Tesla to follow suit. While Tesla currently has no local production plans, industry observers note its entry could seed long‑term growth in India’s nascent EV landscape.
