For Our Green World co-founder Nanditha Vedula, environmental advocacy did not begin with initiatives or institutional backing. It began with a question: why does caring about the environment feel inaccessible to so many students? She noticed a pattern among her peers. Many cared deeply about sustainability, yet felt unsure how to translate that concern into meaningful action. The issue was not a lack of awareness, but a lack of approachable entry points. This gap between awareness and action became the foundation for what would eventually become Our Green World.
Redefining Action
Instead of framing sustainability as a large, often overwhelming commitment, Nanditha focused on reframing it as something achievable. From the start, Nanditha’s approach challenged the idea that impact has to be large to be meaningful. Instead of promoting sweeping changes, Our Green World focuses on small, consistent actions that students can realistically incorporate into their daily lives.
This philosophy is rooted in accessibility. Not every student has access to funding, institutional support, or even the time to dedicate to large-scale initiatives. However, most students can take small steps, whether that means reducing daily waste, making more sustainable consumption choices, or participating in community-based initiatives. The goal is not to create a small group of people doing everything perfectly, but a large community of students doing something consistently.
Building From the Ground Up
Launching an organization as a high school student came with significant challenges. Without an existing framework to follow, Nanditha had to build systems from scratch. This included defining the organization’s mission, creating outreach strategies, and establishing partnerships with schools and local organizations. Along with her team, Nanditha led Our Green World from 2 founding members to a network of international volunteers working to create a more sustainable foundation for the organization.
Balancing Vision with Reality
At the same time, Nanditha continues to navigate the demands of being a high school student. Balancing rigorous academics, extracurricular commitments, and leadership responsibilities requires careful time management and prioritization. Her experience reflects a broader reality for student leaders. Meaningful work does not happen in isolation; it happens alongside competing responsibilities. This has required her to be intentional about how she spends her time and to focus on consistency rather than perfection.
Redefining Impact
Through her work with Our Green World, Nanditha’s understanding of impact has shifted. It is no longer about scale alone, but about consistency and influence. Small actions, when repeated across communities, create lasting change. Impact is not a single outcome; it is a process that builds over time.
From Ideas to Action
A key part of this approach is translating awareness into tangible experiences. At the school level, this has taken shape through initiatives like thrift-focused events, where students explore sustainable fashion by repurposing or reimagining clothing. These events make sustainability interactive and accessible, allowing students to engage creatively rather than passively. By bringing environmental action into familiar spaces like school libraries or classrooms, these initiatives remove the intimidation often associated with sustainability, which makes environmental action visible and reinforces the idea that sustainability can be integrated into everyday life.
Collaboration
Partnerships have been key to expanding reach and strengthening initiatives. By working with schools, student organizations, and even the City of Austin, Nanditha has been able to turn individual efforts into collective action. These collaborations show that meaningful change is built together, not alone.
Looking Ahead
Nanditha Vedula plans to continue growing Our Green World while keeping its focus on accessibility and student-driven impact. The priority is not just expansion, but ensuring that the work remains practical and sustainable within each community.
A Generation Ready
Her work reflects a broader shift in how students approach global challenges. Instead of waiting for the right moment, they are taking initiative now. With the right tools and mindset, they are not just raising awareness, they are able to create application solutions.
