Princess Leonor is poised to become the first woman in almost 150 years to rule in her own right as the new queen of Spain after her father, King Felipe VI, signed a decree on Thursday removing age restrictions previously imposed on women. The 20-year-old is the heir to the throne and oldest daughter of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia.

She will be Spain’s monarch when her father abdicates or dies. The last queen regnant was Isabella II in the 19th century, and Leonor’s reign will be a major moment for the Spanish royal family and the Bourbon dynasty.

Princess Leonor is the elder sister of Infanta Sofía and was born in Madrid on October 31, 2005. She is known as the Princess of Asturias, a title traditionally given to Spain’s heir. Since an early age, her upbringing and public life have been focussed on the roles she will one day undertake.

She attended Santa María de los Rosales School in Madrid, and after finishing the International Baccalaureate at UWC Atlantic College in Wales. She specialized in law, world affairs and public service. Lady Leonor is fluent in Spanish, Catalan, English and French also speaks Arabic and Mandarin Chinese. She first addressed the nation when she was 13 at the Princess of Asturias Awards.

Princess Leonor has also started military training, as is legally required. She signed up to the army in Zaragoza in 2023 and then entered naval training in Galicia. At this time she travelled at sea for months on end, spending a stint aboard a Spanish training ship before joining an actual warship. In 2025, she became the first Spanish royal family woman to perform a solo flight in a military aircraft.

In addition to her training, Princess Leonor has gradually assumed official responsibilities at public events and trips in Spain and abroad. As princess leonor of Spain latest news says, her attentiveness to preparations indicates a well thought out future plan. Her emergence is considered by many as a sign of change and the beginning of a new era for the monarchy as Spain readies its future queen.
