There are not many leaders in the global consulting industry that would possess such a vast knowledge of culture, business strategies, and the desire to engage in globalization as much as ZICG’s CEO & founder Angelo Zilio.
Having accumulated more than twenty years of work experience across multiple fields, Angelo Zilio has been playing an important role in helping SMEs and start-ups to address global business challenges.
His career spans across different industries and forms different parts of the world such as the United States, Japan, and Morocco and has shown that success involves appreciation of cultural differences in the business world.
Below is the interview Angelo gave to Business Outstanders where he shared his thoughts about his career, difficulties in the field of consulting for global companies, and the prospects for further development of international business.
Q. Angelo, what inspired you to pursue a career in international consulting, and how has your journey shaped your leadership style?
My passion for international consulting was born from a desire to bridge cultural divides and help businesses expand beyond their local markets. Over the past 20 years, I have worked with diverse clients across multiple sectors, which has not only broadened my understanding of global markets but also shaped my leadership style to be adaptable, culturally aware, and highly collaborative. Founding allowed me to channel this experience into a company dedicated to breaking down cultural and geographic barriers for SMEs and start-ups. I believe in leading by example, fostering a team environment where ideas are valued, and everyone is encouraged to contribute. My approach combines American organizational skills, German discipline, and Italian spirit, which helps me navigate the complexities of global business with a unique perspective.
Q. Can you share a personal experience or challenge in your professional life that significantly influenced your perspective on business and mentorship?
One of the most significant challenges I’ve faced has been negotiating across different cultural contexts. For example, I’ve had to adapt my approach when working with high-context cultures like Japan, where communication relies heavily on implicit understanding, compared to low-context cultures like the United States, which value direct and explicit communication. Opening subsidiaries in both Japan and Morocco presented unique challenges, as I had to navigate vastly different business norms and cultural expectations. These experiences taught me the importance of cultural awareness and adaptability in negotiations. More recently, I had the opportunity to teach cross-cultural business negotiation to leaders at the United Nations, where I shared insights on how to approach diverse cultural perspectives with sensitivity and strategy. This blend of hands-on experience and mentorship has greatly shaped my approach to guiding others in international business.
Q. Can you explain ZICG’s core mission and how it guides your strategic decision-making?
ZICG was founded two years ago with a mission to break down cultural and geographic barriers, providing strategic internationalization services tailored to SMEs and start-ups. Our goal is to help clients expand into new markets efficiently and sustainably. With over 20 years of experience, I bring a deep understanding of cross-border operations in a wide range of industries, including food, cosmetics, automotive, dietary supplements, pest control, fashion, medical equipment, software services, and renewable energy.
At ZICG, we tackle internationalization with a comprehensive approach that includes employing temporary export managers, developing strategic business plans, and enhancing international communication. We also offer services in data analysis, organizing overseas trade fairs, facilitating mergers and acquisitions (M&A), and providing training on intercultural negotiation. This diverse suite of services ensures that our clients have the support they need at every stage of their international expansion. Our mission informs every decision we make, allowing us to leverage our expertise and strategic insights to deliver customized solutions that foster long-term growth and success for our clients.
Q. What unique challenges do SMEs face during the internationalization process, and how does ZICG address these challenges?
SMEs often struggle with limited resources, regulatory complexities, and cultural differences. With my experience as a Temporary Export Manager and Internationalization Consultant, ZICG addresses these challenges by providing tailored solutions that include Direct and Indirect Export strategies, Joint Ventures, and guidance on establishing foreign branches. Our deep understanding of cross-cultural business practices enables us to provide nuanced support that fosters sustainable international growth
Q. How has the adoption of digital technologies changed the way ZICG supports its clients?
Digital technologies have significantly transformed how we operate at ZICG, enabling us to expand our reach and offer enhanced support. We utilize advanced CRM systems and data analysis software to maintain an up-to-date overview of global trends and market dynamics, which allows us to provide clients with timely insights. Additionally, we leverage AI and other internal software models to optimize decision-making and streamline processes. This digital infrastructure allows us to scale our services efficiently and connect seamlessly with clients and partners worldwide, whether it’s through virtual collaboration or direct support in retail chain positioning and e-commerce channel development. By integrating these technologies, ZICG can respond swiftly to client needs and stay ahead of market shifts, ensuring that we deliver effective and adaptive solutions tailored to each client’s goals.
Q. In your opinion, what are the most significant market trends currently shaping the international consulting industry?
While AI and digital transformation are widely recognized trends, the consulting industry is increasingly shaped by sustainability and region-specific needs. In Western countries, there is a growing demand for products and services tailored to older populations, such as healthcare and wellness, while developing countries focus more on infrastructure. At ZICG, we help clients adapt to these trends by integrating sustainable practices and tailoring strategies to local market dynamics, ensuring successful entry and growth across diverse global regions.
Q. How do you measure the success of ZICG’s initiatives in both the short-term and long-term?
In the short term, we assess success through client satisfaction, project milestones, and achieving targeted business outcomes. Long-term success is reflected in the sustained growth of our clients and the strength of our expanding global partnerships. As we believe strongly in training and continuous learning, we’re also developing a cutting-edge academy to equip our clients and partners with advanced skills, although I can’t reveal all the details yet. Additionally, we’re exploring initiatives in publishing to further our impact in the industry. These efforts are all part of ZICG’s commitment to delivering lasting value and supporting our clients' growth on a global scale.
Q. Can you share an example of a recent innovative solution or service that ZICG has introduced?
At ZICG, we’ve recently introduced technology that allows us to assess countries more quickly and efficiently, using fewer resources. This innovation enhances our ability to provide timely insights and support to clients, no matter where they are expanding. We’ve also developed practice-oriented courses with extensive hands-on activities, such as the cross-cultural business negotiation program we launched at the United Nations. These courses, coupled with an inventive approach, give us a strong competitive edge by equipping clients with practical skills and real-world experience that set them apart. Together, these initiatives are allowing us to advance rapidly and deliver exceptional value to our clients.
Q. What measures does ZICG take to ensure a positive and engaging work environment for its employees?
At ZICG, we prioritize open communication, continuous learning, and recognition of our team members’ contributions. We believe that fostering a supportive and collaborative workplace is key to maintaining high employee engagement. We provide regular training and development opportunities, including access to our upcoming academy, which is designed to keep our team at the forefront of industry trends. Additionally, we encourage work-life balance and offer flexible work arrangements to support our employees’ well-being. By creating an environment where innovation is valued and everyone feels empowered, we ensure that our team is motivated, engaged, and invested in our collective success.
Q. How do you cultivate a culture of innovation within your team at ZICG?
We foster innovation through open communication, continuous brainstorming, and monthly general meetings with all partners to discuss new ideas and implementation strategies. Every team member is encouraged and incentivized to contribute ideas, which are seriously considered and often integrated into our plans. Additionally, we regularly analyze feedback from our customers and collaborators, using these insights to refine our approach and ensure that we’re meeting evolving needs. By valuing input from both our team and our clients, we create an environment where fresh perspectives drive our innovation process.
